Objects of Delight
I have no hesitation in first acknowledging the support of my partner, Lenore Ogilvy, without whom this research would not have been possible. She generously supported me in my MA studies that preceded this project, and then without hesitation continued to provide me with a lifestyle that allowed me the privilege of concentrating on my research for four further years. She also offered encouragement, advice, respite, care and intellectual challenge throughout the project.
I must also sincerely thank my supervisory team: my Director of Studies Professor Stephen Dixon, together with Dr. Rosemary Shirley and Dr. Jane Webb. They shared my excitement as I explored new ground, and I benefitted greatly from their combined expertise and guidance, which was always willingly, good-humouredly and constructively given. Their advice was always positive and valuable, and I was fortunate in having supervisors who offered a powerful mix of creativity and academic rigour. Any failings within this project and thesis are entirely my responsibility.
My research was made possible by financial assistance in the form of a Studentship granted by Manchester Metropolitan University.
